Fitting 70 deliveries a day into two vehicle spaces

In the restricted delivery area for the 2-year, £165 million refurbishment of the Treasury, the Zone Management solution from The Logistics Business played a vital role in ensuring smooth delivery of materials.
With over 70 truck loads of material being delivered each day for the refurbishment of the HM Treasury building in London’s Whitehall and space for only two vehicles at a time, the Zone Manager solution for managing vehicles and cranes played a vital role in ensuring smooth operation. It was developed by The Logistics Business. Steve McHugh, logistics manager of Clipfine, which was responsible for vehicle movements, explains, ‘This is a very large project, but we only had space for two vehicles at a time, so we had to organise things precisely. We used Zone Manager to create a schedule for all our cranes, hoists and vehicle deliveries, which we can then use to manage what could easily have become chaos if we were not on top of it.’ A no-parking policy around the building was strictly enforced. With the Cenotaph across the road and Downing Street around the corner, there were demanding security restrictions. Site access was extremely tight, and King Charles Street is accessible from one side only. Late deliveries were not acceptable. The Zone Manager software produces a weekly delivery schedule that is distributed to all contractors on site. Each delivery that arrives within its allocated-15-minute slot is directed to a booking-in area for unloading by crane or sub-contractors. Design-and-build contractors Bovis were instrumental in the choice of this system. Nick Daniel, project manager for Bovis Lend Lease, says, ‘We chose Zone manager to assist in streamlining site activities and to ensure the project ran effectively and in line with our logistical intent and agreed procedures.
