Buderus solar panels and boilers update hotel services in Cornwall

Buderus Solar Panels
Buderus solar panels and boilers have been installed to update the heating and DHW installation in the Treglos Hotel near Padstow.

Following a detailed energy survey by Government agency Resolve, a hotel in Cornwall has replaced its 20-year-old oil-fired boiler with solar thermal panels and modern high-efficiency boilers. Fuel savings are estimated to be about a third.

Treglos Hotel overlooks Constantine Bay near Padstow in Cornwall and has developed over the years into a 42-bedroom premier leisure hotel with separate self-catering apartments and a host of luxury amenities, including a private golf course.

Technical Services Surrey (TSS) worked with Buderus on the design of the system based on a further technical assessment of the heating needs of the hotel, seasonal patterns of usage and the age of existing pipework and radiators. The Buderus technical team recommended two low-NOx 140 kW cast-iron boilers for the heating and 20 solar panels for DHW. These boilers have 3-pass combustion for achieving low CO2 and NOx emissions.

A comprehensive Buderus SC40 controls package provided an integrated solution to maximise the operating efficiency of the solar panels and boiler. An animated graphic display of various areas of the system enable daily outputs from the solar collectors and subsequent energy use to be monitored.

The boilers have been sized so that the separate apartments and swimming pool can be served in the future

Chris Ickemeyer of TSS tells us, ‘Buderus specified the pipework and hydraulics required and made sure everything was there just when it was needed, ensuring a smooth-running assembly and set-up procedure. This was very important, as we only had a 3-week window whilst the hotel was closed to complete the installation and test it thoroughly.’
