Ecobuild maps the way to a sustainable future
Ecobuild returns to Earls Court in London from 26 to 28 February with over twice as many exhibitors as last year and more free seminars - over 75 compared with 60 last year. Among over 320 exhibitors are nearly a hundred featuring energy-efficient heating, air-conditioning, lighting and alternative and renewable energy. The show will also feature a series of impressive attractions linked to three key themes — zero carbon, water management and renewable energy. With zero-carbon legislation looming, Ecobuild's ‘Road to zero carbon’ and ‘Zero carbon house’ attractions are expected to be crowd pullers. The ‘Road to zero carbon’ — realised as a series of external wall elevations — will show how different combinations of superstructure, insulation and cladding can contribute to a low-carbon outcome. Another attraction is Solar city, which will feature many of the leading options available for renewable power and heating, including products from Dulas, Baxi Heating, Viessmann, Applied Energy Products, Kingspan Hot Water, ICB and Solar Century. Biomass boilers will be in evidence, too, with Hamworthy Heating, for example, showing boilers using wood chips or pellets — alongside solar collectors and controls. Heat-pump technology will abound throughout the show. Look out for Mitsubishi Electric's Ecodan air-source heat-pump boiler that can reduce carbon emissions by up to 35% compared to a gas-fired condensing boiler and help new homes achieve Level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. Space Airconditioning will feature Daikin's Altherma heat-pump based system for providing the heating and hot-water requirements of homes. Dimplex will also be on the heat-pump bandwagon as a way of meeting Level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. For public-sector projects, Dimplex is one of only three approved suppliers of ground-source heat pumps under phase two of the Government's Low-Carbon Buildings Programme. Ferroli will launch a comprehensive range of air-source heat pumps and the AquaSol XS plug-and-play solar Water-heating system. Sanyo's will focus on its ‘Think Gaia’ philosophy of environmental responsibility, which commits the company to use global resources and skills to develop solutions for sustainable existence on Earth. Among Sanyo products on show will be its Eco G Power, which combines VRF air conditioning with the generation of electrical power and hot water to reduce carbon emissions by over 30%. The stand will also feature solar-powered air conditioning that offers a COP of up to 7.0 at full load and up to 24 in some instances. Another product will be its heat-pump water heater using carbon dioxide as the refrigerant to generate hot water at 65°C with a COP of 3.75.
