Heating industry seeks standards for biofuels

Burner manufacturer Riello has called on the Government to produce statutory requirements for the use of biofuel in the heating industry by introducing a heating-fuels obligation. The company sees biofuels as a real chance to cut carbon emissions for heating — but is concerned about the amount of good-quality biofuel likely to be available for this purpose. Many major players in the heating industry feel that there will not be enough good-quality biofuel available for the heating industry after obligations for road transport have been met. Many organisations in the heating industry are working together on an industry standard for biofuel. Riello, for example, makes burners that are compatible with biofuel, but an industry standard is needed for the fuels as well as for the equipment itself if manufacturers are to offer any kind of warranty. Paul Adams, managing director of Riello, says, ‘We are hopeful of getting a specification soon, and any news that fuel duty will also be lifted on biofuel for heating would also be welcomed.’
