Bringing the female touch to plumbing — Rachael Calland has joined Cruden Mechanical Services as an apprentice.
School leaver Rachael Calland has joined Cruden Mechanical Services of Warrington as an apprentice plumbing and heating engineer. She was one of two apprentices recruited this year from a shortlist of 10 school leavers who applied for apprenticeships with the company during the summer. She will work on site for four days a week and attend Wigan College once a week to study for NVQ Level 2 qualifications. Her 3-year course will be followed by a one-year CORGI training course to qualify as a gas fitter. She is currently working on a maintenance contract in Liverpool for a housing association with her mentor Peter Weir. Rachael says, ‘I had a weekend job in a DIY shop, and that’s where I decided I wanted to learn a trade. I’ve been completely accepted on site — nobody thinks any different of me for being a woman.’
