Inviron brings benefits of open system to NHS Trust

The open-systems business of contractor Inviron is installing an integrated building system in the new Sandwell and West Birmingham Ambulatory Care Centre. Considerable long-term benefits are expected in terms of functionality and freedom from being locked into a single manufacturer. A wide range of systems will be controlled, including BMS, nurse-call, door access, CCTV and alarms for medical gases. All will use a common open-systems technology. Open systems installed by Inviron use the LonMark standard for control networks. They are said to offer greater flexibility, easier management, higher levels of scalability and lower whole-life costs. Chris Butchart, general manager of Inviron Open Systems and chairman of LonUsers United Kingdom, says, ‘The use of an open system configuration has allowed the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust to free itself from “lock ins” and given the estate’s team the flexibility and freedom to implement self-diagnostic and remote-monitoring functionality which would have been difficult to achieve with stand-alone proprietary system.’
