Ideal Commercial Boilers delivers hospital replacement project

Two floor-standing condensing boilers from Ideal Commercial Boilers have replaced two old cast-iron sectional boilers at Normanby House, the dermatology and ophthalmology departments of King’s College Hospital in London. the Imax Xtra 240 boilers were specified by Matt Gent, project manager with JD Services HVAC Ltd and were chosen primarily for the compact size, quality and small carbon footprint.

The work involved removing the old boilers which, it was reported, once burned coal or coke. In recent years they had been updated to run on gas. However, they had come to the end of their useful life and were beyond repair. The work had to be carried out in the heating season, with minimal disruption to heating services.

Matt Gent explains, ‘We managed to remove some redundant equipment from another part of the plant room and design a new system that included a new low-loss header and primary boiler circuit, new reverse-return connections to the boilers in the circuit and the addition of a new variable-temperature circuit to reduce energy costs.’

The team installed all the new pipework connections and pre-installed the new flue within the plant room up to the connections of the old units. It then took only a day to isolate the old boilers, disconnect them and take them out of service before making the connection to the existing system.

The old flues were removed and a new flue liner run down the existing chimney stack to connect up the new floe header. Finally, the BMS was modified to run the new boilers and monitor their use.

Such is the efficiency of the new boiler plant, combined with the added variable-temperature circuit that just one of the new boilers can keep the hospital supplied with heat and hot water.
