Building for the future — part 2

How many people are there with misgivings about the sort of examinations that children at school and students take? Many people wonder about the worth of media studies, psychology, leisure and tourism and a whole range of other courses. Those with engineering and technical experience have another concern — namely the number of young people studying only for single science at GCSE, so that they are unable to study separate sciences in the sixth form and prevented from embarking on a career in engineering. The solution is in the hands of those working in engineering, as the experience of a team with a major firm of consulting engineers demonstrates (page 12). This team has long been introducing school children to the excitement of engineering — particularly building-services engineering. Its efforts have been effective in attracting them to engineering courses and a career in engineering — and clearly should be emulated by other companies
