What’s in store for retail lighting?

Havells-Sylvania, LED lighting

With retailers looking to save energy, reduce fuel bills and lower carbon emissions, the latest generation of LED lighting solutions offer a quick win. Ian Major of Havells-Sylvania outlines the benefits.

Energy costs can be huge for retailers. With fuel bills set to rise at least 10% year-on-year, these can have a massive impact on the bottom line, particularly as the High Street struggles to emerge from recession. Couple these costs with issues such as the Carbon Reduction Commitment and the Corporate Social Responsibility agenda, and energy is now more in the spotlight than ever.

Lighting can account for a significant part of the electrical load in retail and supermarkets – typically 20-30%. So anything that can be done to save energy and reduce costs needs to be looked at. The lighting sector is continuously innovating, and the latest developments in LED technology are seeing costs tumbling while lighting efficacies and burn hours are far superior to alternative lamp sources.

Havells-Sylvania is working with retailers to improve the energy performance of new and existing stores. For example, the new RefLED SA111 lamp has helped create an energy-saving, low-maintenance and high-performance lighting scheme for the revamped changing room area of the All Saints store at Westfield, London. Supplied in warm white, the RefLED SA111 is designed to be a direct replacement for its halogen equivalent and features excellent thermal management, making it the perfect LED replacement for retail applications.

The LED lamps have a payback time of just 10 months at All Saints.

iQ Lighting performs lighting maintenance for All Saints, and a key consideration for the project was to create a scheme that could meet the exacting demands required for a changing area as well as save energy and reduce maintenance. “All Saints has always tended to use halogen lamps for its lighting schemes but it wanted to try something different with the Westfield store,” says Brian Brooke of iQ Lighting.

“By using the Sylvania RefLED SA111, All Saints has been able to get all the benefits of LED lamps without fundamentally changing its approach to lighting design. In fact, All Saints has had some great feedback already and is looking forward to many years of maintenance-free high-performance use. The payback period is going to be approximately 10 months, which is very impressive.”

All Saints stores are all unique with individually crafted light fixtures. Working with Havells-Sylvania, the All Saints lighting designer was able to seamlessly integrate the RefLED SA111 lamp into the bespoke fixture. The RefLED SA111 has a patented aluminium spiral reflector design that delivers uniform light distribution. The lamp is energy efficient and has a long life of 25 000 hours equalling a short payback period.

All Saints is also looking to trial Havells-Sylvania’s latest LED replacement product the Sylvania Hi-SPOT 7.5 W RefLED ES50; the only direct replacement for the traditional 50W GU10 halogen lamp.

Havells-Sylvania is seeing many retailers now turning to LEDs to achieve energy savings and cost reductions. Make sure you are up-to-speed with this fast-moving technology.

Fast solutions for retail

Havells-Sylvania has introduced the Sylvania-branded Fast Trunking System to its range of commercial lighting products. Designed to minimise installation time on-site for electrical contractors, the system is a fast-fit, T5 fluorescent lighting system that is ideal for large, open-space applications such as retail superstores and warehouses.

The Fast Trunking System can be surface-mounted or suspended with single or double T5 lamps (35 W, 49 W and 80 W) with a wide choice of reflectors available for maximum output flexibility. The system’s modular components combine to create a complete, linear lighting system.

The main module comes in two lengths – 1500 or 3000 mm – with ‘T’ ‘L’ and ‘X’ connectors and end caps adding to the system’s design flexibility. Each pre-wired module is DALI-compatible with electrical connection via a fast-connect system. Plug-and-play internal electrical connectors and the quick mechanical connection system ensure fast, reliable and flexible installation.
