BG Controls maintains conditions in new school

BG Controls, building-management system, BMS
Services for over 1300 pupils in the new Gainsborough educational village are controlled by a BMS installed and operated by BG Controls.

BG Controls has installed the intelligent building-management system for the newly built Gainsborough Educational Village. It brings together four old schools in the town into a single facility that is shared by two schools. They are Trent Valley Academy to provide secondary education for 1200 mainstream pupils and the Aegir Community School, with 112 pupils.

The 4-storey building has various low- and zero-carbon technologies, which are monitored and controlled by the BMS to ensure optimum efficiencies and best performance. They are biomass boilers, ground-source heat pumps, natural ventilation and rainwater harvesting.

Natural ventilation is provided by stacks on the side of the building. Depending on temperature or CO2 levels, the BMS controls dampers on these stacks to draw air from the classrooms. Controllers on the windows automatically open them to admit fresh air.

The site is remotely monitored by BG Controls’ bureau. Staff at the village can telephone bureau engineers about changes to occupancy, such as a meeting outside of normal school hours. Proactive and remote programming of the control system enables energy to be conserved with minimal involvement from onsite facilities staff.
