ABB drives help boost energy efficiency of new hospital

Coventry hospital
A halving of energy consumption for electric motors and drives in the ventilation systems of the new Coventry Hospital are expected using matched pairs of ABB high-efficiency motors and drives.
Matched pairs of high-efficiency motors and drives serving the ventilation system in block A of the new hospital in Coventry will reduce energy consumption by over 1400 MWh a year when it comes into service in 2006. Such savings represent 50% compared to traditional control methods such as throttling valves and vanes. Similar savings are expected in two more planned blocks. Ranging in size from 550 W to 45 kW, the 230 packages are being supplied by ABB. They are being delivered just in time for the installation timetable of Air Handling Systems, which is supplying the ventilation system. The drives are being mounted on the side of the air-handling units and are enclosed to IP54. ABB will commission the drives to optimise them for the applications and activate the energy-optimisation contained in the direct torque control. The contract for this 1200-bed hospital is worth £150 000 to ABB.
