A Scorpion Powertherm CHP unit at the Crieff Hydro in Scotland is reducing energy costs and adding to standby-power capacity.

One of Scotland’s leading hotels, the Crieff Hydro in Perthshire, has installed a 75 kW(e) Powertherm CHP system supplied by Scorpion Power Systems to provide inexpensive electricity and generate heat for hot-water supply for showers, baths, heating, swimming pools, spa baths, laundry and kitchen. It uses natural gas and will also provide additional support for the existing standby generator in a area that has been prone to power cuts.

Situated in 900 acres, Crieff Hydro was the first hydro in Scotland and now offers over 40 leisure pursuits for all ages. The hotel houses a sports complex, two swimming pools, a spa, ballroom and a choice of restaurants.

Joe Carmouche, engineering direct at Crieff Hydro, says, ‘The Powertherm CHP units are an excellent innovation. They are doing precisely what was promised and performing well. The assistance and advice we have received has been first rate, and we are delighted with the results and the additional standby power which is enabling us to provide our guests with even better standards.

Powertherm will provide us with a relatively short term payback. As we have received an interest-free loan through the Carbon Trust, our investment is proving extremely worthwhile.’

Powertherm is a pre-engineered combined-heat-and-power package with an overall efficiency of 84.%
