Controls review brings 30% savings for district heating

Following a revision of the main plant controls strategy for communal heating systems of Wandsworth Council, AEC Environmental has achieved energy savings of 30%. The approach was based on revising the controls strategy for the main plant to eliminate inefficiencies and ensure a good match of heating supply to demand using AEC’s analytical techniques.

There are five district-heating systems serving 835 dwellings. The energy savings amount to CO2 reductions of 670 t a year.

The programme was helped by Wandsworth’s plant and controls being well maintained and in good working order. More of the council’s district-heating systems are being improved and controlled and showing similar savings, which will increase annual CO2 savings to 1000 t a year.

The project was 100% funded by EDF Energy through the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target scheme.
