Condensing boilers feature in Woking heating upgrade

Accompanying the upgrading of electric heating systems in sheltered homes in Woking to gas condensing boilers is the supply of electricity from fuel-cell CHP units.

The £1.4 million contract to upgrade heating in sheltered homes throughout Woking has been awarded to BTU Heating. The project is part of Woking Borough Council’s climate-change strategy and phase 5 of the local community energy system. The project involves replacing electric central-heating systems with high-efficiency gas condensing boilers and radiators. Electricity for running lighting and electrical appliances will be exported from surplus energy produced by several CHP units installed at Woking Pool in the Park leisure-centre complex. This fuel-cell CHP was installed and commissioned by BTU and produces all the energy for the centre to be self sufficiency plus an additional 600 kW of electricity, which is being supplied to the sheltered housing. The overall benefit is that residents will pay the same for heating, lighting and electrical appliances as they previously did for heating alone.
