PHEs reduce maintenance costs of domestic hot water

Maintenance costs for domestic hot water at three hospitals in Kent have been reduced by replacing shell-and-tube heat exchangers with plate heat exchangers (PHEs). The new heat exchangers do not have to be stripped down each year for insurance inspections.

H. W. Sladden Commercial Ltd installed the heat exchangers. The new systems heat water on demand. Removing the need for water storage also reduces heat losses and the risk from legionella bacteria.

The compact size of the systems made possible with PHEs has enabled East Kent Hospitals Trust to plan and build smaller plant rooms for the longer term.
