Sophisticated luminaire addresses challenges of LG7

A significant step forward in luminaire design — Whitecroft’s Duo.
Whitecroft Lighting’s Duo luminaire gradually varies its intensity and colour temperature throughout the working day to counteract the peaks and troughs in alertness that most people experience through the day. Duo luminaires also have features to address the visual needs of a workspace. At the heart of Duo is optical technology using a complex polycarbonate material that combines microscopic pearls of opal thermoplastic elements in a clear base, resulting in excellent light transmission. This microstructure refracts light to such an extent that it appears translucent and delivers an extremely diffuse effect — unlike traditional diffuser materials, which have very poor light transmission. These luminaires also create a graduated brightness between the high intensity of a light source and the relatively low luminance of the ceiling. The polycarbonate material produces a highly diffuse light with constant brightness from all angles of view. This intermediate brightness helps the eye adapt to the differing brightness within the field of view. One effect is to create a uniform brightness from all angles to optimise visual comfort. Together, these features create bright room surfaces in line with those required by CIBSE Lighting Guide LG7. For maximum design flexibility, the fitting has central or side optic versions — which can be micropolymer pods, living louvres or semi-specular louvres. All fittings are available in 600 mm-square or 1200 x 300 mm sizes. Duo luminaires are also available with built-in LED elements for creating dramatic effects — such as ‘floodlighting’ the building from within to create a dramatic visual statement. LEDs can also be supplied in corporate colours to aid navigation or enhance architectural features. The entire range has air-handling capabilities and will adapt to all common UK ceiling types.
