Autoflame wins Queen’s Award for combustion-control technology
Autoflame Engineering has won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for innovation in providing combustion-management solutions for boilers and burners in the commercial and industrial markets. The company was established in 1972 and says it was the first in the world to apply micro-processor technology to control combustion — a development that led to massive savings in fuel and significant reductions in the emissions of harmful gases, long before reducing the world’s carbon footprint became the political focus it is today. Autoflame Engineering developed the first micro-processor-controlled burner-management system over 20 years ago and holds seven worldwide patents on products designed and made at its premises in south-east London. The company received other Queen’s Awards in 1996 and 1997. Samantha Kirby, operations manager with Autoflame, says, ‘To be recognised as one of the most successful companies in the country for innovation recognises and rewards the many hours of hard work and the late nights put in when on the verge of an engineering breakthrough.
