MITIE is working with Cowlin Construction as services provider for the James Square development at the University of Plymouth.
MITIE has teamed up with contractor Cowlin Construction for a £31 million redevelopment project at the University of Plymouth. The James Square development is a partnering project between the university and the University Project Partnership. It will be completed in three phases. The first stage will be the major refurbishment of the Mary Newman building, followed by a new residential building and, finally, a new academic building. MITIE is responsible for M&E services contracts and will also supply air-conditioning, heating, ventilation and ICT services to the James Square development. The mixed-use scheme will include 329 new en-suite study bedrooms and the refurbishment and upgrading of the Mary Newman building to convert it from an academic block to residential, providing a further 157 student rooms. The new facilities are designed for energy efficiency and low emissions. Air conditioning will be avoided wherever possible by using passive ventilation and highly reflective solar glazing, solar shading and thermal mass. The academic building is aiming to achieve a BREEAM rating of excellent. The residential units are due to be completed in Autumn 2007, followed by the academic building at the end of Summer 2008.
