Colt delivers smoke safety for Hong Kong Airport

A Colt natural smoke ventilation system for the SkyPlaza at Hong Kong International Airport replaced the mechanical system in the original design specification and gives performance and cost advantages.
Hong Kong Airport Authority has awarded Colt International what the company believes may be the largest order for natural smoke ventilation in the world in the last year. Natural smoke ventilation designed and supplied by Colt replaced the mechanical system in the original design and gives significant performance and cost advantages. Over a thousand Kameleon automatic glazed smoke-release ventilators have been integrated into the skylight system of Hong Kong International Airport’s SkyPlaza — a £130 million office, retail and business complex. The skylight system covers a vast ceiling area in the shape of gentle waves and is a distinctive feature of the interior design. Simon O’Hea, marketing director with Colt, says, ‘SkyPlaza is a world-class development that demanded world-class technical solutions for fire engineering. The architects, SOM Aedas JV, also demanded that the smoke-control systems should not compromise the building’s aesthetics and should cause only a minimal reduction in natural daylight.’ SkyPlaza is integrated with the main passenger terminal and express railway station. It has check-in facilities, a new terminal for coaches and a 38 000 m2 retail and entertainment centre, including an IMAX cinema. Kameleon ventilators are fitted over 15 roof-level smoke zones. Make-up air is provided by automatic sliding doors and smoke ventilators that open in unaffected zones at high level. Control is by two compressed-air systems. To meet the client’s high specification, performance tests were conducted to much more stringent levels than usually required by recognised standards for smoke ventilators. These ventilators also allow natural daylight to enter the building and reduce overheating.
