Smart homes to save elderly care costs

Smart homes, Institute of Mechanical Engineers, IMechE

The Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) says that smart technology will play a crucial role in helping the elderly remain in their own homes – reducing pressure on NHS resources.

Age UK estimates that caring for a patient in their own home costs less than half of what it costs to keep them in hospital.

The IMechEreport, ‘Healthy Homes: Accommodating an Ageing Population’ highlights the role that engineers will play in designing technology that supports health and safety, but which is also appealing to older users and their families as well as carers.
