Viega’s Megapress steals the show

The extensive thick-walled steel-tube heating system installed in the £6.5 million development of the Rockvilla centre that will be the headquarters of the National Theatre Scotland was quickly, easily and reliably installed using Viega’s Megapress connection system. It was specified by design consultant and engineering company Atelier Ten for over 500 connections in sizes from 15 to 54 mm.

The centre enables this theatre group to have all its rehearsal and production activities under one roof for the first time. It will consist of three rehearsal rooms, creative development spaces, a learning and community suite, production workshop, technical store, office space, meeting and social areas.

Having seen the Megapress system used on another project, the Atelier Ten team selected it for use on this project.

Contractor Moffat Mechanical installed the system in just five months. The system saves up to 60% of assembly time compared to traditional tube-connection methods such as welding or threading, both of which can affect the integrity of the tube wall.

Pressing means there is no excess cutting oil, metal swarf, hemp residue or jointing compound that would be used with traditional methods. Time was therefore saved, as the system did not require flushing to remove any residual installation debris.

Fittings that are inadvertently unpressed are easily identified by a positive leak so that the problem can be rectified.

William Giplin, mechanical project engineer with Moffat Mechanical, commented, ‘Having worked with the system before, we knew just how easy the Megapress would be to use. We are so impressed with the Megapress system that we are continuing to use it on other sites.’
