Guru Systems’ Pinpoint web-based monitoring platform for heat networks has been validated by the DECC (Department of Energy & Climate Change) to achieve major improvements in performance and reductions in energy consumption — winning for it a CIBSE Building Performance Award for energy-saving product or innovation of the year last month (February 2017).

DECC-validated figures from over 20 heat networks across the UK show that this technology has the potential to reduce the use of input fuel by 33 to 51% on existing heat networks to achieve average savings of £179 per home per year.

Pinpoint enables operators to locate problems and provides costed measures for improvement. One installation improved efficiency by 68% and achieved an 80% cost saving in pump-room energy.

Improving the efficiency of the heat network on one site enabled the tariff for residents to be reduced from 7.7 to 3.8 p/kWh.

Pinpoint enables heat-network operators and designers to visualise performance date, remotely diagnose the causes of inefficiency and view interventions ranked by cost, performance improvement and projected payback period. Extensive interventions have been carried out on three of the networks studied.

The platform was launched in April 2016 and is now being used on 67 heat networks serving over 4000 homes to provide efficiency date on flow and return temperatures, peak-load data and customer-demand profiles.
