Carlo Gavazzi makes light work of lighting-control system for Flitwick leisure centre

The various lighting-control strategies required by the new £15 million leisure centre in Flitwick are managed by a single package based on Carlo Gavazzi’s Dupline system, which is fully integrated with the DALI protocol. The new centre includes an 8-lane 25 m swimming pool, separate learner pool, toddler splash area, 4-court sports hall, health-and-fitness suite for 120 people, three fitness class studios, two squash courts and an outdoor climbing wall. There are also wet and dry changing facilities, reception and offices, crèche, cafe for light refreshments and a health referral room for confidential wellbeing advice.

The existing leisure centre, which contained a small 4-lane swimming pool and 55-station fitness room, was simply not big enough for the growing local community.

The lighting-control system was installed by REL Electrical as part of the £900 500 electrical contract.

Steve Jamieson, technical manager with REL, explains, ‘The specification called for a microprocessor-based lighting-control system, and we wanted a simple, single solution that could integrate everything into a single package or, at the very least, minimise the amount of interface wiring that we had to install. The Dupline system gives us a single loop that runs around the building, minimising our cabling and giving us one simple system as a backbone.’

The system is designed to be simple to operate.

When a member of staff arrives in the morning, a simple light switch illuminates just the entrance area. A central back of push switches in the main office will operate lighting in remote areas via the Dupline system.

The swimming pool has two preset lighting levels — 200 and 300 lx. One switch operates lighting fittings to 200 lx, and another brings lighting up to 300 lx.

In changing-room areas microwave presence detectors are linked to 1 to 10 V Dupline controllers to switch on lights when someone enters the space. If no movement is detected for 15 minutes, lights dim down to 10%.

The last member of staff to leave the facility can use a switch to turn off all lighting in the building. If the master switch is not activated by a set time, lighting will be turned off automatically.

Steve Jamieson concludes, ‘This was an electrical-only contract, so we didn’t have the opportunity to integrate the lighting control with the HVAC control, but that is something we would definitely consider in the future.’
