Heat recovery boosts chiller efficiency and delivers free hot water

Recovering heat from the chiller at a Nuffield Health Wellbeing & Fitness Centre in Hertfordshire is delivering 5000 l of free hot water a day and reducing electricity consumption by 115 kWh. The saving in energy costs of £9600 a year is achieving a payback of two years.

The chiller was originally installed with noise dampers, which on warm days caused the chiller to struggle to achieve its target temperature because of the restricted airflow through the condensers. A bespoke Geyser Thermal heat-recovery system has increased the condenser capacity by 20%, reducing the load on the compressor and the energy used by the chiller.

Not only has the energy used by the chiller been reduced, but lots of hot water at 64°C is produced. The only parasitic load is a 60 W circulating pump.
