Increasing the standby power for a data hosting centre of a major telecoms company are two 3200 kVA units supplied and installed by Shenton Group.

Shenton Group has won a major contract to supply additional standby power for a data-hosting centre of a leading telecoms company. The project was a complete turnkey operation that included design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning.

The telecoms company has expanded its data centre, necessitating the building of a bespoke energy centre for the new generators. The new servers needed UPS and generator power support to ensure continuity of service in the event of a power outage.

The project took eight months of planning and implementation and included two 3200 kVA generators to add to the output of 19 other generators on site. The new generators had to be installed out of hours while the building was being constructed. There is space for two more generators to be added.

The new generators can run at 10% overload for at least an hour, and Shenton Group also provided fuel tanks with sufficient capacity for eight hours at full load.

They energy centre is in an urban environment, so the generator rooms have inlet and outlet attenuators with motorised louvres so that noise levels do not exceed 65 dB(A) at one metre.

Remote Alfa Laval radiators were craned onto the roof to cool the generators. The radiators are less high than the surrounding louvres and operate at noise levels of less than 65 dB(A) at one metre. There are two cooling circuits for each radiator.

Other work include the installation of two 5000 A air circuit breakers, adequately ventilated for continuous full-load operation.

Load-bank testing was carried out using a 3500 kVA resistive/reactive .
