Riegens delivers new lighting for station

Riegens, lighting, luminaire

Lighting from Riegens has been installed at London’s Fenchurch Street Station as part of a general refurbishment of the station lighting. Specified by consultant Parsons Brinkerhoff, Riegens was chosen for the project for its expertise in providing bespoke lighting solutions, combined with high-quality standard products. The station has four platforms arranged on two islands on a viaduct. The main concourse is on two levels connected by stairs, escalators and lifts.

The brief was for a scheme that was more energy efficient and which would also provide a better quality of light and improve the environment of the station. Some areas required luminaires that would fit into the existing structure of the building. Lighting solutions were created that would reduce overall energy consumption by 20%.

One of the areas requiring a bespoke design was the architectural ceiling above the escalators and above the retail area, which had to have a good uniform light levels. The fitting required uniform diffuser illumination to provide the illusion of skylights. Riegens designed 1200 mm-square panels with large specialist diffusers to provide a very successful skylight effect.

Concourse lighting required luminaires to fit into the existing chassis to avoid disturbing the ceiling. Riegens developed a bespoke solution that also met the latest Building Regulations, using T5 lamps.

Platform lighting also required a bespoke solution, with luminaires designed to fit into a suspended architectural trunking system which is an oval-shaped anodised extrusion design. The biggest issue was condensation and cold weather, so T8 lamps were used for their better resistance to low temperatures.

For the station entrances and ticket areas, standard products were used, all using long-life energy-saving lamps to reduce maintenance.
