Copper thefts act to boost sales of plastics pipework

Durapipe attributes increased sales of over 25% of its plastics pipes, fittings and valves over the last 12 months to the widespread thefts of copper pipework from UK construction sites. The raw-material price of copper has risen by up to 27% for smaller copper tube (15 to 42 mm) and as much as 38% for larger sizes (54 to 108 mm).

The company believes that the considerable costs incurred by copper thefts has put contractors under pressure as they look to fulfil price promises and make a profit, forcing them to look for alternative pipework material and more cost effective solutions.

The price of plastic systems has remained stable and is less likely to fluctuate, giving contractors confidence when pricing medium- to long-term projects.
