JS Humidifiers helps to slash humidification costs for data centre

A novel approach to humidification in this data centre using the JetSpray from JS Humidifiers is reducing energy costs by over £35 000 a year compared with electrical steam humidification.

Energy-efficiency humidification for Fujitsuís North London data centre uses a JetSpray humidifier from JS Humidifiers to provide electrostatic control.

Heat recovered from the data halls is used to evaporate cold-water sprays to humidify fresh air entering the data centre, rather than energy-hungry steam humidifiers.

Lee Prescott of engineering consultant Red Engineering Design, explains, ĎA low humidity presents an unacceptable risk of static for a data hall, which at Fujitsu North London Data centre was to be controlled to 50% Ī10% RH. The main humidity requirement is in the winter, when the fresh air being introduced is very cold, with saturated relative humidity but low moisture content The incoming cold air is heated to 30įC prior to humidification with heat recovered from the data halls, allowing the air to absorb more moisture. The spray humidification then increases the moisture content of the warm air whilst cooling it back down to the room supply temperature of 17įC.

ĎThis humidification process is very energy efficient as the heat used to evaporate the moisture is recovered from the data hall using water-to-water heat pumps, removing the need for steam humidification.

The JetSpray compressed-air and water humidifier can release up to 160 l/h of moisture into the AHU. A JetSpray humidifier of this size uses about 320 MWh less energy to operate than an equivalent electrical steam humidification, resulting in a energy cost saving of over £35 000 a year.
