Ecobuild shows the way to a sustainable built environment

Ecobuild

Describing itself as the ‘biggest in the world for sustainable design and construction’, Ecobuild at Earls Court in London from 3 to 5 March will have more than 800 exhibitors — ‘the biggest showcase of sustainable construction products anywhere’.

The exhibitor list includes nearly 150 names in the building-services category, including plenty of familiar names such as Danfoss Heat Pumps, Alfa Laval, Calorex, Monodraught, Rehau, Passivent, MHS Boilers, Dimplex, Baxi Group, Viessmann, Vent-Axia, Hamworthy Heating, Mitsubishi Electric and Lochinvar.

The associated seminar programme is huge, with a hundred free seminars. One of the sessions is devoted to making micro-renewables work. Another will discuss the road to zero carbon and refurbishing Britain. Innovation and efficiency is another key session.

Among big names making presentations will be Boris Johnson, returning to the show, but this time as Mayor of London to evaluate the success of the proposals he voiced at last year’s Ecobuild to build a cooler London. He will be at the show on 5 March, joining a raft of high-profile speakers in the Arena — including Alastair Campbell on marketing sustainability, Michael Portillo on the single most important factor in reducing global carbon emissions. Germaine Greer will stir up the debate by asking, ‘Do eco buildings have to be ugly.’

The real and tangible will also be much in evidence, with ruralZED’s zero-carbon house returning to the show after its launch last year. There will be updates to the original design and a detailed case study on the performance of the house on display last year, since reassembled in Dunkirk. Features include 20 solar PV panels, passive heat-recovery ventilation, passive solar gain, biomass boiler and solar-thermal water heating.
