LJJ completes new laboratory for Pirbright Institute

LJJ, contractor

M&E contractor LJJ has completed a £5 million building-services installation at a new containment level 2 laboratory complex at The Pirbright Institute in Surrey. This is the national centre for surveillance, control and prevention of viral diseases in livestock and those that can spread from animals to humans. The new laboratory, designed by NBBJ Architects, forms part of the Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council’s programme of investment at the site.

The project included infrastructure works such as four new transformers, a new gas main, water-supply networks and connection to the site’s standby generator.

Inside the new building are complex ventilation systems to create lab areas that will operate under negative pressure. There is also a standalone ventilation system for the cryogenic storage rooms and independent extract systems for each micro-biological safety cabinet.

Other specialist elements include Vulcathene pipework, carbon-dioxide and nitrogen supplies, oxygen-depletion sensors and a reverse-osmosis water-purification system.
