Hamworthy meets domestic hot water demand of Nottingham University sports pavilions
To meet the surges in demand for hot water of Nottingham University’s new 800 m2 of sports pavilions at the Riverside Sports Complex J. Tomlinson, Integrated Building Solutions, installed Hamworthy condensing water heaters and 1000 l storage tanks. There are 38 changing rooms, meeting rooms and viewing galleries. Outside there are 60 ha of playing fields, where a large number of matches can be played simultaneously. Sports played include football, cricket, rugby and American football.
Hamworthy equipment also provides space heating.
The plant room in each of the two pavilions contains two Stratton 100 kW wall-hung condensing boilers, four Dorchester DR-FC 120 kW condensing water heaters, a 1000 l Powerstock storage tanks, Chesil pressurisation unit, Burstock expansion vessel and Horton chemical dosing pot.
Each pavilion has 100 showers. The hot-water demand was calculated on the number of matches that could be played at the same time to ensure that the peak demand could be met.
Stuart Hayward, senior contracts engineer with J. Tomlinson, explained, ‘We chose to go for multiple units with smaller outputs rather than one or two water heaters with larger continuous outputs so energy wasn’t wasted when there was only a small demand and there would be sufficient back up if one product was out of use.’
A remote monitoring unit was installed so that the university’s facilities manager can monitor the gas usage of the equipment from the main campus.
